Iași was for a long time the capital of Moldova, and it shows: it's a city of palaces, old churches, and wide boulevards, with the Palace of Culture as a landmark across the whole city. It's also a young city — it hosts Romania's oldest university and tens of thousands of students who fill the cafés in the center.
You stroll along Ștefan cel Mare Boulevard, pass by the statue of Ștefan cel Mare, climb to the Palace of Culture with its neo-Gothic towers, and step into the courtyard of the Metropolitan Cathedral, with Romania's largest Orthodox church. The Botanical Garden and Copou, with Eminescu's linden tree, are close to the center.
Around, treasures of another kind: the Cetățuia and Golia monasteries, in the city, and an hour away to the north, the road to the painted monasteries of Bucovina practically starts from here.
