But Pitești's real strength is what lies to the north, along the Argeș Valley. Within an hour you have Curtea de Argeș Monastery, Vidraru Dam, and — for those seeking authentic legend — Poenari Citadel, Vlad the Impaler's actual fortress, with its nearly 1,500 steps. The Transfăgărășan also starts from here, from the south.
