Sinaia 👑

Pearl of the Carpathians — the kings' castle, the fir trees, and the cable car up to 2,000 meters.

Sinaia is where Romania's kings came to breathe. Carol I built Peleș Castle here, and the town grew around it: villas with turrets, a belle époque casino, and a monastery that gave it its name. You stay at 800 meters altitude, with the Bucegi Mountains above your head and the Prahova Valley spread out at your feet.

It's explored on foot, but uphill — the town climbs from the station to the castle, and every street gives you a different view. Peleș is a must, Pelișor is more intimate and less crowded, and Sinaia Monastery is a stone's throw from both. Between them, parks, terraces, and the scent of fir trees.

And above, the mountain begins. The cable car takes you to Cota 1400 and higher to Cota 2000, where the ski slopes start in winter and the trails to the Bucegi Plateau in summer. It's one of the few destinations in Romania that's just as worth it in January as in July.

Frequently asked questions

How much time do you need for Sinaia? +
One day covers the castles and the center. Two days give you time for the mountain too — the cable car, a hike on the plateau, or a day of skiing. Three, if you also want Bușteni, Azuga, or Brașov.
Peleș or Pelișor, if I only have time for one? +
Peleș, for its grandeur and spectacular halls. But if you can't stand the crowds, Pelișor is quieter, warmer, and many prefer it. They're a few minutes' walk from each other, so both are worth it.
Can you ski in Sinaia? +
Yes. The ski area goes up to Cota 2000, with slopes for all levels and a season usually from December to March. Predeal and Azuga are alternatives 12–20 km away.
Is Sinaia worth it in summer? +
Very much so. The castles are just as beautiful, it's a few degrees cooler than in the plains, and the cable car opens up the Bucegi Plateau for hikes.
How far is it from Bucharest to Sinaia? +
About 125 km, around two hours by car on DN1 or on the highway to Ploiești. There are also frequent direct trains, and the station is right in town.

"Sinaia has something few resorts have: effortless elegance. The castles give you history, the cable car gives you the mountain, and the fir trees take care of the rest."
