Suceava 🏯

The residence of the rulers of Moldavia, built at the end of the 14th century and strengthened by Ștefan cel Mare. Modernly restored, with exhibitions, mannequins in period costumes, and walls you can climb.

Built by Bogdan III at the beginning of the 16th century, with exterior painting preserved on the south facade. UNESCO monument, right in the city.

The region's history museum — useful before you head to the monasteries, to understand the context of the frescoes and Ștefan's reign.

Real Bucovina households, dismantled and rebuilt at the foot of the fortress: wooden houses, church, mill, pottery workshop.

One of the oldest civil buildings in the city, from the 16th–17th century, now an ethnographic museum. Small, but charming.

The first metropolitan cathedral of Moldavia, where Ștefan cel Mare was anointed ruler. Discreet and often missed by tourists.

Known for the albastru de Voroneț, a pigment whose recipe has never been fully reproduced, and for the Last Judgment covering the entire west wall.

The last built and the best preserved, surrounded by walls like a fortress. The Ladder of Virtues on the north wall is the most spectacular fresco in Bucovina.

With the Siege of Constantinople painted on the south facade. Quieter than Voroneț and with a very beautiful courtyard.

Smaller and without a tower, but with frescoes of rare fineness and an intimate atmosphere. It combines easily with Voroneț, they're close.

The necropolis of Ștefan cel Mare — his tomb is here. It has no exterior painting, but it has the greatest historical weight in the region.

The closest to the city, with the tallest monastery church in Moldavia and remarkable stone carving. Often skipped, unfairly.

The village of black ceramics, a firing technique without oxygen preserved for centuries. You can see the potter at work and buy directly from the workshop.

18th-century salt mine, with a chapel carved in salt and a ballroom at depth. Smaller than Turda, but older and more authentic.

Base town for Voroneț and Humor, with good guesthouses and a museum of folk customs. Good for sleeping if you're doing two days of monasteries.

Bogdana Church, the oldest stone church in Moldavia, and a traditional pottery fair.

Spa and mountain resort, with mineral springs and a ski slope. Farther, but worth it if you have a free day and want mountains.

The area around the Casa de Cultură gathers most of the restaurants. Look for beet borscht, Bucovina tochitură, and poale-n brâu pies.

Many guesthouses in Gura Humorului and Sucevița serve home-cooked food, often better than in the city. Worth stopping for lunch between two monasteries.

Bucovina is the region of afinată and berry jams. Buy them from the market or directly from your hosts.

A city with a pastry tradition, with homemade cakes at pleasantly surprising prices.

The best attraction for kids in the city: walls, towers, mannequins in armor, and space to run. The restoration was done with visitors in mind.

Real houses you can enter, water mill, animals. It connects directly with the fortress visit, they're neighbors.

Large park with a lake, below the fortress, good for a long break between visits.

Kids love the descent into the mine, and the saline air is a bonus. Bring a jacket — it's cool down there all year.

The monasteries are scattered over 40–75 km, and public transport between them is rare. Without a car, you need an organized tour.

They are active monasteries. Shoulders and knees covered; many offer skirts at the entrance, but it's easier to come prepared.

The monasteries close earlier in winter, sometimes at 4:00 PM. Check the schedule if you come between November and March.

In many churches, interior photography is forbidden or charged. Exterior frescoes can be photographed freely.

Almost 450 km, 6–7 hours by car. Suceava has an airport, and the flight is often the most reasonable option.
