Târgu Mureș 🎭
Art Nouveau, a medieval citadel, and the most beautiful culture palace in Transylvania.
Târgu Mureș is the city many pass through on their way elsewhere, without knowing what they're missing. In the center, Piața Trandafirilor opens wide between Secession buildings — the Hungarian Art Nouveau style, with colorful facades and floral decorations, just as spectacular as in Oradea, but less known.
The Palace of Culture dominates the square: a 1913 building with a Hall of Mirrors and stained glass that leaves visitors speechless. A few steps away, the Medieval Citadel — still partially inhabited, with bastions and churches within its walls — reveals a Târgu Mureș much older than the elegant facades of the square.
The city is bilingual and bicultural, with a strong Hungarian community felt in the architecture, the menus, and the atmosphere. It's also a good base for exploring the area: Sovata with the salty Ursu Lake, Corund with its traditional ceramics, and the Bucin Pass are all less than an hour away.
