Oradea 🏛️
The Art Nouveau Heart of Romania — vibrant, elegant, surprising.
Oradea is a city that learned to showcase its past. After a restoration that took years, the Art Nouveau and Secession facades in the center shine again, side by side, in pastel colors that make you want to walk with your head up. It's a compact, elegant, and surprisingly relaxed city, set on the banks of the Crișul Repede River, just a quarter of an hour from the Hungarian border.
The center is almost entirely walkable. Union Square and Ferdinand Square are connected by the Republicii pedestrian street, an avenue of palaces with terraces and specialty coffee shops. Along the way, you'll come across the Black Eagle Palace with its covered passage, the Church with the Moon and its unique mechanism, and dozens of buildings worth a second look.
And when you want to relax, hot water is at hand: Nymphaea Aqua Park is right in the city, and the thermal resort Băile Felix is nine kilometers away. Oradea is one of the few destinations in Romania that's good in any season — facades to stroll by in summer, steaming thermal waters in winter.
