A 2,500 year old Greek town with its wide beach and six resorts in the yard.
Mangalia is the oldest city on the Romanian coastline and nobody says it loud enough. Behind the streets today stands Callatis, a Doric colony founded almost 2,500 years ago by Greeks coming from the Pontic Heraclea.
The good part for those who come on holiday: the beach is wide, the sea enters smoothly and, unlike the northern coastline, you have room to stretch your towel even in August. Mangalia is also a spa resort — the mesothermal sulfur springs brought people here to treatment long before beach tourism existed, and still bring them.
And there is something that is not seen on the map at first glance: administrative, by Mangalia hold the resorts in the south — Saturn, Venus, Cape Aurora, Jupiter, Neptune, Olympus. Basically you sit in a city with history and you have six different beaches a few kilometers away, each with its own pace.

The Esmahan Sultan Mosque
The oldest mosque in Romania, erected in 1575 by the daughter of Sultan Selim II. Shaded courtyard, fountain and an old Ottoman cemetery, in the centre.
The Wall of Callatis
Fragments of the ancient fortification, left in sight between the buildings of the modern city. It is not a museum — it is simply there on the street.

Here lies the tomb with papyrus — the only papyrus ever discovered on the territory of Romania, found in a Hellenistic tomb.

The courtyard of the 1575 mosque is shadowy and cool just when the sun begins to beat. From there, on foot, you cross the wall of the ancient fortress between blocks.

The Museum of Archaeology puts head to head the city below: ceramics, inscriptions, coins and the tomb with papyrus.

Change the beach
Saturn is a few minutes away, Venus and Cap Aurora a little further away. Each has a different rhythm — choose by the head of silence or terrace.

Walk the cliff to the marina. The sun goes down over the city, not over the sea — but the light on the waterfall is worth the trip.
Southern beaches and resorts
Six beaches a few kilometers from each other, each with a different character.
Administratively, the southern resorts belong to Mangalia. Basically, this means that if you stay in the city you have a beach at hand for every mood, without driving more than a quarter of an hour.

Callatis, the city under the city
What remained on the surface of the Greek colony.
Callatis was founded in the 6th century B. C. by Dorians coming from Pontic Heracleia and beat its own currency for centuries in a row. The modern city stands right above it, so archaeology emerges in unexpected places — on the street, in courts, at the foundation of a block.

The most spectacular fragment is seen in the center, a few steps from the cliff. Large blocks of stone, placed now over two millennia, between 20th century buildings.

Museum of Archaeology “Callatis”
The collection of the city: Greek ceramics, inscriptions, statuettes, coins beaten at Callatis. The piece that does not exist anywhere else in Romania is the papyrus found in a Hellenistic tomb.

The Esmahan Sultan Mosque
